Failures2016_post7

Failures_Process Beyond Success @ Cascina Cuccagna is a project by Raumplan and ACCC for Fuorisalone 2016.

Failures is a deep journey into the relationship between process and success in the design world.

The exhibition core is the main room, known as Galleria, where unique pieces that never made it out of the factory are displayed. On one hand, prototypes by eminent masters as Aldo Rossi, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Marco Zanuso, Anna Castelli and Richard Sapper, owned by museum institutions of prestigious brands such as Alessi and Kartell. On the other, research products by renown contemporary designers as Riccardo Blumer and Francesco Faccin.

Cascina Cuccagna is a 17th century farmhouse immersed within the apartment buildings of the Porta Romana area: more than 4000 sq. m. of covered spaces and garden. After the recent conservative renovation, the Cascina is now a lively cultural spot and has become one of the people’s favourite location during Milano Design Week, known by exhibitors for its uniqueness in the urban structure and for the high number of visitors.

Suitable for public venues and the increasingly compact spaces of private homes, where it becomes crucial to have smaller sanitary fittings for enhancing freedom of movement: CUBE , the mini washbasin by Scarabeo designed by Emo Design, reflects the brand’s identity while offering innovative shapes and functions – in line with the company’s fruitful collaboration with the design studio begun a few years ago.

The CUBE mini washbasin appears like a suspended ceramic cube. The washbasin reveals a distinct aesthetic dimension without renouncing functionality, regardless of its compact dimensions: hand washing is facilitated by the rather large depth of the bowl. Rigorously made in Italy, CUBE  is made of ceramic and is available in three different sizes.

At Salone del Mobile 2016, Knoll  is pleased to introduce the Bertoia Diamond Chair and Platner collection in an 18 karat gold-plated finish.

The 18k gold-plated Diamond Chair honors Bertoia centennial celebration: in celebration of the Harry Bertoia Centennial, Knoll is pleased to introduce the Bertoia Diamond Chair in an 18 karat gold-plated finish. The option, developed in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Platner Collection, pays homage to beryllium’s golden quality that Bertoia so favored. The Harry Bertoia Centennial is Knoll’s year-long celebration of the life and work of Harry Bertoia.  Recognized worldwide for his groundbreaking furniture designs for Knoll, Bertoia was primarily a sculptor.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Platner Collection, Knoll is proud to announce Platner Gold, an 18k gold-plated finish option. The finish, plated in Italy, is available for the Platner Lounge Chair, Platner Arm Chair, Platner Stool, Platner Dining Table, Platner Coffee Table and Platner Side Table. The Platner Collection was designed in 1966 by architect Warren Platner, who intended it to be gold-plated. However, the technology of the time made gold plating in large-scale production impossible, leading to the nickel-plated steel known today. The 2015 issue of Platner Gold fulfills Platner’s original wish. The pieces in the Platner Collection are each made up of hundreds of individual welds, all soldered by hand, resulting in forms that recall “sheafs of wheat.”

Preview of Salone del Mobile 2016 by VG New Trend: VENEZIA table, SHINKE sofa and Armchair “ELIZABETH”.

VENEZIA table: a thousand years of history. VG honours the city of Venice and its “Briccole”: the oak poles that for a thousand years have guided boats along the navigable parts of the lagoon. Each briccola, at the end of its lifespan, is replaced and VG chose to honour them by using retired poles to make furniture that is unique for its beauty and the magic of this city. The Venezia table blends the allure of wood tempered by time and nature, with glass, which mimics transparency of water, the queen of the city.

“SHINKE” Sofa: timeless elegance. The tall capitonné back and the soft and original lines characterize this sofa. The covering is in a precious, smooth and soft velvet, in delicate nuanceses. The pillows give vivacity and the metal footers give a touch of lightness.

Armchair “ELIZABETH”: sophisticated comfort. Elegant and exclusive, Elizabeth is characterized by a comfortable deep seat and a oval back. The structure is made of wood and its capitonné covering is proposed on the delicate tones of taupe, in a soft fabric. The cushion is presented in old rose colour, while the edge of the seat and the buttons are in dove gray. Delicate nuances for a timeless elegance.

FUORISALONE 2016: food design @ Din-Design In

Even for Fuorisalone 2016 Promotedesign.it organizes the huge expositive event Din- Design In. Exactly like the last edition there will be the chance to admire the ideas of more than 150 designers from all over the world. The Milanese Design Week will begin on Tuesday 12th April 2016 and it will finish on Sunday night 17th April 2016. At the event, which is going to be in a stratetic location at Via Massimiano 6/ via Sbodio 9, in the Lambrate area, there will be more than 600 ideas by different designers.

And…. The 2016 edition will have a surprise: it’s the topic of most of our conversations, the protagonist of several TV series, countless books are dedicated to it, the most popular social media are full of pictures depicting it… needless to say that we are talking about food.

For this reason, it will be one of the contents characterizing the DIN-Design In that, during the Milan Design week, will exhibit the ideas of more than 150 designers coming from all over the world. There will be a temporary shop and, most important, a food area proposing a very rich and interesting offer of food and beverage. Here everyone will find what he/she is looking for: the ones researching the high quality genuine products and the ones sure that the aesthetics is very important too while talking about food.

Among the realities playing a very important role in this context, is Bedda, that represents the Sicilian street food and sells the Pane (bread) Cunzatu as one of its flagship product. This dish comes from the Sicilian popular traditions. So the Milanese Design week is coloured and scented by the South Italy breeze: not only Sicily’s, but also Puglia’s gastronomic culture is represented. Thanks to Aperia we will discover the Flavour of Salento, where the street food is intertwined with the history but it’s still living in contemporary times. Not only cooking excellences from the south of Italy but from the North too, are the protagonist of the Fuorisalone 2016. By following the trends of the period, DIN-Design In selected a product largely consumed at different levels: beer. There are people simply loving it for what it is, others are looking for its finest qualities, tasting it as if it is wine. Baladin, the beer company coming from Turin, will accomplish everyone’s desire thanks to its very rich offer.

The Common Denominator between the before-mentioned realities is the passion for taste, the love for their own territories and, most important, the exemplary attention for the shape, the box containing the results of a so careful and hard work.

Nicolette_1

Nicolette grew from the idea of creating an aluminium chair with light and delicate lines yet robust enough for everyday use; a chair capable of withstanding the effects of time, designed for outdoors but suitable for a variety of uses; an original, well-made chair. Nicolette shows a certain sophistication, maintaining a simple character which imparts elegance.

Ethimo and Patrick Norguet have created – for this year Salone del Mobile – a chair that combines a variety of ma- terials along with different techniques for working the aluminium: the structural parts in aluminium are injection-moulded, then assembled using components in extruded aluminium.

This characteristic of elegant simplicity, combining lightness and practicality with attention to detail and carefully sourced materials, makes the chair ideal for furnishing outdoor spaces as well as for enhancing the living area. Nicolette is a contemporary take on an unconventional elegance.

Granada

Formitalia will present 2 new collections at Salone del Mobile 2016: Granada & Elvira.

Granada is a timeless collection characterized by a sober and refined style. The high-quality leather Vogue Jade has been embellished with dark green stitching and with an elegant quilted seatback which enhances the soft and voluptuous line. The structure has been wisely designed in veneer oak grey semiglossy with metal gold matt inserts. The brass feet col. gold matt provides a lightness and brightness sensation.

Elvira is an elegant and refined dinette-set designed in order to furnish unique and exclusive houses with the aim of providing unforgettable moments. The round table has a top in veneer wengé that creates a lightness sensation and a very nice contrast with the big central leg in leather Seta Powder quilted with the base in brass semiglossy. The chair, with its refined details, perfectly matches with the table: quilted external side in leather Seta Powder and lacquered legs in wood. The unique oval horse logo is printed on both sides of the table leg and on the internal back of the chair.

Research, technology and experimentation on materials and functions: all key elements of the new collections that Kartell will present at Salone del Mobile Milano 2016. Kartell is focusing on innovation combined with signature design.

The preview for this year Salone are:

  • Antonio Citterio has created a versatile family of tables: Multiplo. The key idea driving this project is that you can create completely different tables depending on the finish, colour or pattern used. The plastic structure is combined with different bases and ultra-thin ceramic tabletops. The table’s legs and frame are made from moulded thermoplastic polymer while the top is in marble-effect, mass-coloured ceramic. From the minimalist to the decorative, from pop art to more elegant designs, from bourgeois dining tables to the perfect bar tables for contract furniture, Multiplo has an inherently eclectic and versatile spirit.
  • Piero Lissoni designed the Piuma seat, one of the most revolutionary and enterprising products for Kartell in its repertoire of technology and materials. It took two years of intense research to settle on the unusual blend needed to create Piuma’s basic design: a complex thermoplastic polymer reinforced with numerous fibres including carbon in order to give the structure greater mechanical rigidity and a lower weight. It is the first time that a material containing carbon fibre has been injection moulded, and for a stylish, aesthetically-pleasing product at that. Thanks to this unprecedented mix of materials, the Piuma is not only extremely light and slender but also incredibly durable, flexible, suitable for outdoor use, and foldable. The designer has also presented the final version of the all-new Largo, a 3-person maxi sofa with a polycarbonate frame that offers solid support and linearity to the wide cushions.
  • Philippe Starck extended the Aunts&Uncles family with his latest table, Sir Gio. The designer’s stylistic traits can be instantly spotted in the strictly-transparent polycarbonate spokes that form the base of the table.
  • Eugeni Quitllet put his name to a new chair, the Dream’Air, a concept that Kartell has never before visited in terms of form. The main characteristic of this new star product is the combination of diverse materials within a geometric base structure and an ethereal and transparent seat.

Scavolini_Ki_1_part1

The Ki collection, designed for kitchen and bathroom environments, combines the prestigious Italian craftsmanship of Scavolini and the distinctive approach of Nendo, the Japanese studio headed by Oki Sato, which interprets design as surprise, experimentation and refined details.

The Ki concept is trying to make the kitchen “hidden” in two objects to create space and offer complete design freedom: a container, an unique object with a strong connotation, synthesis of an expressive code that can be repeated ad infinitum and a wooden shelf of pure essentiality (Ki in Japanese, meaning at the same time container and wood). The collection reveals a rigorous interpretation of minimalistic and extremely contemporary taste, and embodies exclusive values, creative thinking, innovative challenges, on-going research, genuine Italian quality and finely-worked details. With this project, Scavolini envisions new ways of inhabiting space, with the pivotal element—the container—resting on linear-shaped shelves. What emerges is an actual storage system that dominates compositions designed for both kitchens and bathrooms, with Scavolini Bathrooms.

The kitchen: in the Ki kitchen, which includes linear, island and peninsula compositions, the containers rest on shelves and function as wall units, or re-appear in the sink and hob units—novel, important elements that add a personal touch. An absolute total look: the doors, profile handles, upstands, back panels, plinths and tops come with a single finish.

The bathroom: for this environment, the container replaces traditional wall units and also defines the wash basin, offered in the lay-on, semi-recessed, under-top and free-standing version. The mirrors, rigorous slabs resting on the tops and against the walls, conceal a practical LED lighting system.

No one thought that a small addition of corundum to the traditional formula of ceramics could generate an enormous revolution in the world of the bathroom: in 2013 Laufen launched the innovative material SaphirKeramik, the world’s thinnest ceramic, after half a decade of research, testing and experimentation under the guidance of Dr.Werner Fischer. Since then this has been the company’s leading product, generating a truly new trend in the entire bath sector. After this innovation nothing has been the same in the world of bathroom design anymore.

Besides design, the advantages provided by SaphirKeramik affect the environment and availability of space too: first of all, less material is required and in addition, the product is completely recyclable, making it ecological and sustainable. Secondly, thanks to the slimmer structure, the material can also be used in very small bathrooms, optimizing and refining space. All this without sacrificing the qualities of classic ceramics: total hygiene, resistance to strong detergents, any temperatures, UV-light and mechanical abrasion, near-zero water absorption, and absolutely safe with drinking water.

The new possibilities of this material have stimulated the creativity of many leading  designers, including Konstantin Grcic and Toan Nguyen, who have explored its enormous potential by creating the VAL and INO collections: washbasins of different types, round or squared, with three-dimensional textures or almost mirror surfaces, in a wide range of sizes, suitable for all needs of space and style, each conceived to make the user feel right at home.

For the Salone del Mobile, major designers, including Daniel Libeskind, the Campana Brothers and Arik Levy, renewed their collaboration with LASVIT – the brand which combines the authenticity of glass with innovative technologies and creative craftsmanship –  reinterpreting their past collections created for the Czech House, focusing on the theme art de la table with extraordinary small objects and tableware.

FACET by Moritz Waldemeyer

Moritz Waldemeyer‘s FACET bends the glass to its will. In all its beauty and variety, glass is essentially an amorphous material with no regular crystalline structure. Yet through a design vision and mastery in glass-making craft, the material can come to mimic its opposite, creating highly organized and consistent structures.

As if trying to systematize the chandelier-making tradition, Moritz took the geometrical shape of the Classic chandelier outline and turned it into a diamond-like hexagonal glass building block. On its own, with just single pendant, or in combination of multiple items into a large chandelier, the FACET modules stand out as clear, disciplined and geometrical. The light source included inside every block allows the FACET system to be universal and almost unlimitedly extendable.

For Milan Design Week 2016,
 the organisations and institutions
that support and promote Belgian design under the collective name Belgium is Design, have joined forces
with the international contemporary culture magazine DAMN°. Taking part in the group event A Matter of Perception: Tradition & Technology at the Palazzo Litta, the seventh edition of Belgium is Design’s presentation in Milan, Belgian Matters, features the results of pairings between 13 designers and companies, the latter often coming from sectors far removed from that of furniture design. Each project has been commissioned especially for the event and will be seen for the first time during the Salone.

For DAMN° together with Mosca Partners it is a return to the 17th-century Palazzo Litta, having hosted A Matter of Perception: Products & Materials at the location in 2015.

Belgium is Design has worked closely with DAMN° in selecting and matching the participants for Belgian Matters, who come from all three regions of Belgium (Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia) and occupy three rooms of the Palazzo. The partnerships have been forged and supported by Belgium is Design and present a series of ad-hoc products and prototypes that stress confrontations and commonalities between designers and manufacturers, as they work both with their fields of expertise but also outside their normal experiences. However, for the mix of manufacturers, artisans, industrial producers and research centres, it is often the first opportunity to experiment and encounter design as a collaborative act or in a way that expands and exploits the potential of their role beyond that of a supplier of materials or the tools
of production.

“All around the clock”
Alessi unveils a star-studded line-up for its new range of wall clocks for the upcoming Salone del Mobile 2016.

Alessi is focusing its attention on the concept of time through the interpretations of five high-profile designers: Abi Alice, Giulio Iacchetti, Daniel Libeskind, Studio Job and Mario Trimarchi. The universal notion of time has been creatively interpreted in the new collection by names from the world of contemporary design and advanced architecture.

Daniel Libeskind, one of the most active and dynamic architects of this century, and Flemish artists/designers Studio Job have created their first projects for Alessi with “Time Maze” and “Comtoise” respectively. The American architect sees time as a red labyrinth that “can suddenly swerve to mark an unexpected event”, while the Flemish duo wanted to give a historical perspective to things “with a clock inspired by the 17th century Comtoise pendulum clock”.

The “Infinity Clock” by Australian designer Abi Alice represents the inexorable passing of time with regular and continuous curves that generate infinite movement, while the designer’s “Dotty Clock” was inspired by the age-old methods of measuring time and the geometric shapes of everyday objects: “I sought to create lively combinations also by exploring my interest in colour”. Giulio Iacchetti has rewritten the classic definition of a wall clock by using the corners of rooms as original new locations. “Ora In” and “Ora Out” offer “a surprising formal solution for the clock, inventing the new category of ‘corner’ clocks’”. Mario Trimarchi has created a new element for “La Stanza dello Scirocco”, a collection of objects that reflects the abstract and immobile atmosphere of a magical place: “the room where you take shelter from the sweltering heat in big old Sicilian country houses.”
